» What type of heater do I need, Convection or Infrared?

Although most space heaters rely on convection (the circulation of air in a room) to heat a room, some rely on radiant heating; that is, they emit infrared radiation that directly heats up objects and people that are within their line of sight. Radiant heaters are a more efficient choice when you will be in a room for only a few hours, and if you can remain within the line of sight of the heater. They can be more efficient when using a room for a short period because they avoid the energy needed to heat the entire room by instead directly heating the occupant of the room and the occupant's immediate surroundings.

Both Convection and infrared heaters use a variety of power sources including Electric and Propane.

» What is the difference between Direct and Indirect heat?

The direct air heater takes the space air or fresh air and mixes it with hot gasses from a flame source such as natural gas flame or oil fired flame and returns / redirects it to the space to be heated. The warm air contains all the flame byproducts and toxic gases along with. This type of heater is used in environments that are well ventilated so that exposure to toxic fumes and gases are reduced.

In the indirect system the hot flame gases circulate through a metallic high efficiency heat exchanger which isolates the flame gasses (aka flue gasses) from that of the air to be warmed by passing from the other side of the heat exchanger. This type of air is safe for human exposure as the flame products and toxic COx, NOx and SOx are isolated. Usually all the domestic air heaters are of indirect type.

» Is a Propane heater the right choice?

Propane is one of the cleanest burning heating fuels around and produces almost no toxins, other than small amounts of carbon monoxide that still need venting. Heating oil produces particulate matter and toxins that require heavy ventilation.

A propane space heater isn’t appropriate for all situations. There are some considerations to keep in mind when deciding if a ventless propane heater is a good choice for you.

One thing to keep in mind is that water vapor is a natural byproduct of the combustion process. An indoor propane heater will increase the humidity in the space where it is used. This is not a problem in most cases, but if moisture is already an issue in your home or garage, a ventless propane heater will add to it. A high humidity level promotes mold and mildew growth, and of course can rust that fender you sanded down to bare metal and left sitting in the corner of the garage! All indoor propane heaters require oxygen, and the combustion process uses up the oxygen that is in the air. For this reason, you are required to have at least one square inch of fresh air opening for every 1000 BTUs of gas that are used by any appliance in the space, including water heaters or cooking appliances. Most homes and garages are not sealed well enough for this to be an issue, and have enough air leaks around windows and doors to take care of ventilation.
